Full Version: Should I use Windows Installer to download Ad-Aware?

Hi

When I tried to download the new version of Ad-Aware I got this message in a dialog box.

"Ad-Aware Version 7.0.2.5 is already installed. You must uninstall the existing version before installing 7.1.0.10 Do you want to uninstall the existing version of Ad-Adware?

Yes or No

When I chose Yes it attempted to use Windows Installer to install it.

But I got a Suspicious Behavior warning from Zone Alarm Security Suite.

So I denied it until I get the go ahead.

The last time there was a new version I uninstalled the old version manually without using Windows Installer to get the new version.

Should I use Windows Installer to install the new version of Ad-Aware?

Or is there a problem here?

Thanks
Mike

Hi mikemac:

So ZA doesn't like Ad-Aware's auto uninstall/reinstall routine?

Go to Start/Control Panel/Add-Remove and do it through Windows.

Then install the new version.

Let us know how you make out.

Thanks Chachazz

When I try to remove Ad-Aware from the Add/Remove programs Zone Alarm gives me another Suspicious Behavior warning that says,

"Windows Installer is trying to communicate with \SystemRoot\System32\smss.exe by opening it's process"

So I denied it. When I did I got an Add or Removes Programs dialog box that said,

"Fatal error during installation" with an OK button to click.

When I try to remove it a second time from the Add/Remove programs I get an Ad-Aware 2007 dialog box that says,

"Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance." with an OK button to click.

When I clicked OK I got the same Add or Removes Programs dialog box that said,

"Fatal error during installation" again.

Instead of removing Ad-Aware it seems to be trying to finish the install with the Windows Installer that I started yesterday.

I'm thinking this might be because I did originally click Yes yesterday when I tried to download the new version of Ad-Aware but when I got the Suspicious Behavior warning from Zone Alarm I denied it and stopped the download.

I don't know what to do now.

Should I try to uninstall Ad-Aware with the uninstall link in my programs list?

Thanks
Mike

PS Sorry about the signature file. That was there from the last time I was in here a couple of years ago.

Heya Mikemac

Seems there's something else causing problems. We had a similar problem few weeks ago with an over-secured system (too many AV, AS, AT programs running). So let's try the following instructions here:

READ THIS FIRST (HJT rules)

then post your HijackThis log in

HELP! Think you are Infected? forum.
Our experts will give you recommendations what to do.

I posted my problem and my Hijackthis log as you suggested.

I believe I still have a trojan problem that I thought I got rid of as well besides the Ad-Aware problem above.

For my security utilities I use a paid for copy of Zone Alarm Security Suite, so it is my firewall, anti-virus and added anti-spyware protection. I also use SpywareBlaster and Ad-Aware. And because I'm having this problem with Ad-Aware I just downloaded and ran SpyBot Search And Destroy.

I'm not over-secured am I?

Thanks
Mike

P.S. On the 'READ THIS FIRST (HJT rules)' page the link to SpyBot goes to this http://%27http//www.safer-networking.org/ with a double http://.
Actually both SpyBot links as well as the 'Help! Think you are Infected?' link on that page have double http:// s. Just thought you should know.
