for the last two days we keep getting random popups for Antivirus 2009, Symantec, and other antivirus software, in addition to many others. There were also changes to my homepage, sometimes IE loads pages without any tool or menu bars, etc. I have run Spybot, McAfee spyware and viruscan, and Uniblue Registry programs, but nothing unusual was found. FIrst:
Download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, a self-extracting ZIP archive from here:

• Double-click FixPolicies.exe
• Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
• The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies,
• Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
• A black box will briefly appear and then close.


Second:
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
    Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
    Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
    Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.


Third:
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. (If using Windows Vista, be sure to "Run As Administrator")
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.


Fourth:
Click Start, then click Run.
Enter into the command box that opens: combofix /u and then click OK.

I completed all of the steps that you gave me, but when I tried to run combofix /u I received a message saying windows could not find it. The log from MBAM is as follows:

Sorry ,I posted the wrong ComboFix instructions. Those were for removing the program after we are finished with it. You need the instructions to install and use it. Another Homer Simpson Friday... OMG.gif

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

The logs look good. I cannot find any information on the O21 entry in your HJT log so we should check the file as a safety step.

One other thing - under the properties for the file it shows it as being 748KB in size, but when I attached it the file showed zero. Don't know why. Thanks.

I am not comfortable with it either. No malicious code, but I can find nothing about it. COmmercial software would be recognized and would return on Google, this one does not.

Let's remove it using HIJackThis but leave the file for the time being. If we break something, we can use the HJT restore facility to put it back.


Run HiJackThis and press the Scan' button

When the scan is finished:
Check the following items in HijackThis.

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

THat looks good. We're finished unless there are issues outstanding that are not reflected in your latest logs. WE do need to remove software no longer needed and clean the temp files and folders. There is no need to post back, unless items need attention.

First:
Click [b]Start, then click Run.
Enter into the command box that opens: combofix /u and then click OK.



Second:[/b]
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
    Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
    Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
    Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
