A group of prominent Canadian researchers has launched an initiative to examine how closely companies like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo follow their own principles regarding freedom of expression and privacy.

The Citizen Lab, at University of Toronto's Munk Centre for International Studies, this year uncovered a suspected internet spy network and recently helped Iranians to access content on the web.

The Citizen Lab will be now examining how closely technology companies follow their own agreed-upon principles for conduct.

Google Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. are signatories to the Global Network Initiative. The GNI's goal is to protect human rights in information and communications technology
