The screen on my daughter's Toshiba Satellite M55 often goes black on the right half while staying normal on the left half. We can often "fix" it by squeezing along the top edge of the lid & screen until we find a place that snaps the picture back to full screen. I've taken it apart and the connections seem secure. It seems like something going on with that strip of circuit board running across the top of the screen and not the invertor board at the bottom. The odd thing is it seems to snap back after squeezing in random locations along the top, not the same location from one time to the next (possibly my imagination...). Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi michael3442
Hunter is still on vacation, so I'll try to help you. Has that notebook fallen to ground or got it a hit? Does the same happen at other resolutions?
Which one is the standard one when running that notebook? Did you try changing it?

Hi, thanks for picking up on this. The laptop has likely been dropped, sat upon, knocked, stepped on, slept on, and cursed at having been owned by a teenager for several years. I haven't checked into the resolution but will if you think that is worthwhile. But doesn't the fact that this odd behavior can be "fixed" by squeezing the top of the screen suggest a mechanical issue like a - Read our board rules -ed circuit board? And what is that strip of circuitry running across the top of the screen?

Hunter, do you have any ideas on this problem?

Hmmm. No answer. I've sent Hunter (administrator) two PMs and no reply. Someone inserted the phrase "read our board rules - ed" in my 2nd post above (very hard to see). So I read the rules and saw this:

Hi Michel;
Indeed you have been more patient than can be expected..sorry, Hunter is away for some extended periods of time, from time to time, and we have neglected the post
Problem may well be not too serious - a backlight problem can be just the Inverter or video cable..
Recently, I myself have changed the LCD platter on my Toshiba laptop..it was inexpensive..when inquiring with any repair shop or dealer they say it will cost as much as laptop is worth...don't fall for that straight away...it was not rocket science..a snap out-snap in process, but tricky because of confined space and tiny connectors.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'm getting the problem narrowed down. At this point I think the problem has to do with the controller board on the back of the lcd screen. It could be a loose solder joint on one of the tabs or a - Read our board rules -ed board. I'll take it apart and post back what I find. (I bought her a new netbook, Acer w. 8.9" screen and we love it.)

I've checked our board cause I knew there was a multiple posting of you dealing with the same problem:

B. Udo, once you posted that Hunter would not be back until Sept., I posted a new note specifically addressing my problem; the thread I had originally posted on was somebody else's thread and our problems were not all that similar. After starting my own thread, I then waited for Hunter to return and possibly answer my post. After some weeks into Sept., I sent Hunter a PM, which I could see that he read, but did not reply to. And the story goes on to be even less interesting than it is already.
I have no interest in parsing this any further in order to see who did what. I appreciate the new input to my issue and hope I can make some small contribution by figuring out that my problem is neither the backlight nor the inverter. Apparently issues with the controller board are either less frequent or deemed too complicated to address. It looks like these boards may not be available for replacement but a new screen with an attached board is normally given as the way to solve these types of screen problems. Since the laptop we have is too old to spend that amount of money on, I'll see if I can spot where a solder joint has come loose or where the board may be - Read our board rules -ed. Effecting a resoldering of a connection is something I'd tackle; I don't have a clue what to do about a - Read our board rules -ed circuit board, if anything.
Thanks for the help.
