Hi Ilya and other board members! I have installed the DefenseWall HIPS - trial version on my PC (Windows XP system). I have some questions. :)

1. I have 2 aditional files running on my system now: defensewall.exe and defensewall_serv.exe - are both needed to run or only one? What exactly is defensewall_serv.exe?

2. How do I know that some program's installation file that I ran as trusted installed the new software properly (as trusted) and that it will work properly? Should I always start it with "run as trusted" if I trust that program? What happens if I install some program as "untrusted"?

3. As I see it, DefenseWall works by a simple but great rule: all the files, processes, folders etc. are divided into two groups - trusted and untrusted. Can you tell me what exactly aren't the untrusted files/processes alowed to do? Modify windows system files? Something else too?

4. Where can I see how many days I have left before the 30-day trial expires?

Thank you very very much! :)

PS: When aproximately is the version 3 coming out?

1. Don't know about it, however I wouldn't disable it.

2. If you trust the program, run it as trusted. It should work properly. If you run a setup file as untrusted, you won't be able to install without getting errors very 5 seconds.

3. Untrusted processes cannot modify system files, essential registry entries, files/folders you've set to untrusted etc. For example, if you add My Pictures folder to Secured Files and try to download image to the folder using Firefox, it cannot even access the folder.

4. No idea. =P

That's not correct. Many programs can work installed as untrusted. I have several programs installed as untrusted because I wasn't too sure about them. Some will work, some won't.

Thank you for help, I have 2 more questions:

1. I have a problem setting the system time with "time.windows.com", could it be that DefenseWall is blocking something?

2. Firefox crashed a few times and PC restarted 2 times, I'm not sure if it's DefenseWall or something else, but my PC is clean.

Thank you again! :)

Hi Bellzemos:

Welcome to GSF; it would be to your benefit to take time to read through the Help file; it gives a pretty good explanation and understanding how to work with DW.

Please wait for Ilya's response also.

Both are in need.

If you are sure in software you have downloaded and its source- feel free to run as trusted. Other case, run as untrusted- most of software will runs normally. I use "untrusted installations" for the games I download from the Internet and never had any issues.

Total ruleset is so huge I just can't explain it in two words. All of them are about autorun areas defense, process and threads isolation, files and registry keys protection.

4. Where can I see how many days I have left before the 30-day trial expires?

Such the functionality is not available currently.

If this applet is running untrusted- yes. Just check your untrusted applications set.

I don't know. If you have any doubts- send me zipped .dmp files from your c:\windows\minidump folder.

Hello and thank you! :) I've read it already (not all the parts, but most of them), but I need some direct info related to my problems.

Could you please tell me what exactly do I have to check for the Windows Time Synchronization function? I don't know which application is blocking it.

I will send you the minidump files if this will happen again.

Just check it it's running untrusted with the "Process details" dialog.

Just one question. If I'm not mistaken, version 3 will include a firewall. Will this firewall be compatible with other firewalls? I'm currently using Avira's Security Suite, which includes a firewall. Will I have to disable the firewall in DW or can I use both firewalls simulateneously? I do hope DW will be fully compatible with other security apps.

There is no need to disable anything.
