SLAX is fast and beautiful Linux operating system which fits on small (3.14") CD-ROM disc. It runs directly from the CD (or USB) without installing. The Live CD described here is based on the Slackware Linux distribution and uses Unification File System (also known as unionfs), allowing read-only filesystem to behave as a writable one, saving all changes to memory.

SLAX is available as an ISO image of the CD. It fits on small 8cm CD-R(W). Burn it with your favorite cd-writing software and then boot from the CD. You might want to check your BIOS to assure it's set to boot the CD prior the disc. Read changelog and known bugs before downloading please.

Minimalistic SLAX versions

These editions are very special in their size. One fits 128 MB USB Flash Keys and the other one fits even 50 MB creditcard cd. Be aware that these editions are heavily stripped down, you will miss a lot of libraries to run many SLAX modules.

SLAX SE (Standard) is a pocket operating system providing wide colection of useful software with Xwindow system and KDE desktop environment.

SLAX PE(Personal) is a pocket operating system which fits even 128MB USB Flash Drives. It contains only XFce desktop, Mozilla Firefox, beep-XMMS, Gaim, AbiWord.

SLAX KB(KillBill) is a pocket operating system with the ability to run many Windows applications natively in Linux. It contains KDE, wine, dosbox and qemu.

SLAX SRV is a pocket operating system with many internet services ready to use. Includes DNS, DHCP, HTTP, FTP, MySQL, SMTP, POP3, IMAP and SSH.

SLAX Frodo edition is the console base for all other SLAX releases. It doesn't contain almost anything, only full working Linux command prompt and drivers.

SLAX Boot CD is used to boot SLAX from USB devices on computers which can't boot from USB directly. It can be also used to boot SLAX from ISO file on disk.

SLAX provides a feature called modularity. You can download modules from the Internet and include them on your own CD to enhance your SLAX version persuant to your needs. There are also unofficial modules available for download directly from the site.

Slax 6

Slax has participated in development of so called sqlzma patches; the code implements 7-zip compression (LZMA) into squashfs filesystem. Moreover, squashfs evolved by the time and it now supports bigger block sizes than before. The combination of these two enhancements makes Slax one of the best-compressed operating systems in the history.

All Slax modules are much smaller than any other compressed packages available nowadays for all other Linux distributions, while the speed of decompression remains usually faster than reading the full data from disk.

Slax 6 is portable

Thanks to the AUFS filesystem, the read-only part of Slax (system data and modules) is overlayed by a writable filesystem. You can modify all areas of the filesystem in Slax without any restrictions. Your changes to the read-only parts are transparently copied to the writable branch and stored in memory or in a persistent directory on your disk or even flash drive. Slax is designed to autodetect whether it runs from a writable media, and if that is detected, Slax will save all your changes there automatically.

In Slax, you are not limited to just a persistent home directory - the whole root filesystem is fully writable, so we talk about 'persistent changes' (rather than about 'persistent home', known from other live distributions). You can modify /bin/bash the same way like ~/kderc.

Slax 6 is feature rich

XWindow system, KDE desktop with K-Office, Internet browsing, e-Mail, Instant messaging, CD/DVD burning and ripping, Audio and Video encoding, Multimedia players, all and even more is included in Slax.

Slax 6 is multilingual

There are official releases of Slax in 28 different languages, including Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Nynorsk, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.
