PC INSPECTOR? File Recovery - freeware
is a data recovery program that supports the FAT 12/16/32 and NTFS file systems.

To be able to use PC INSPECTOR? File Recovery 4.x you need a working WINDOWST System. Never install the current version on the drive from which you intend to recover data! The software must be installed and run on a second, independent drive. Website: http://www.pcinspect...po=1&language=1

Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier
Recovers files from disks with physical damage. Allows you to copy files from disks with problems such as bad sectors, scratches or that just give errors when reading data. The program will attempt to recover every readable piece of a file and put the pieces together. Using this method most types of files can be made useable even if some parts of the file were not recoverable in the end. Website: http://www.roadkil.n...hp?ProgramID=29

Recover CHK Files
So what is a CHK file? Well, any time a program or Windows crashes, any files that were open are not closed properly. Part of closing is writing all the file location information in all the right places. Without this info, Windows can't find all the parts of the file. When SCANDISK or CHKDISK is run, all the parts are identified as "lost file fragments" and converted (if you want) into CHK files. Face it. Stuff crashes all the time. If you only run SCANDISK once a month, you get a month's worth of old crash junk. If you were working on (and lost) something important just before a crash, you might want to try to recover any data from any CHK files that exist. On the other hand, if you aren't in a state of panic over lost data, just delete any CHK files. A handy tip: Keep your disk defragmented. That way if you ever do lose it all, the lost file fragments will be more likely to be complete files.

Welcome Competition! A nice guy named Martin Kratz wrote a utility to compete with my UnCHK program. Amazingly, he sent me the source code. So... I compiled it and am offering it here for your consideration. Now you have two open-source CHK file recovery programs to choose from!

Both programs need the Visual Basic 5 runtime files, which come pre-installed on Windows 2000 and newer. If you don't have them, you can get them from Microsoft or Ziff-Davis. I'll do a side-by-side comparison:

Restoration by Brian Kato
Restoration is an easy to use and straight forward tool to undelete files that were removed from the recycle bin or directly deleted from within Windows, and we were also able to recover photos from a Flash card that had been formatted. Upon start, you can scan for all files that may be recovered and also limit the results by entering a search term or extension. In addition, it also provides the option to wipe the found files beyond simple recovery. The program is small and standalone, it does not require installation and can also run from a Floppy disk. Restoration works with FAT and NTFS as well as digital cameras cards.

I would also add don't install these tools on the hdd your trying to recover from as you may overwrite the files your trying to recover. The best policy is remove the hdd and connect it to a different computer or boot using something like UltimateBootCD 4 windows which has most of the freeware tools listed here on it.

Again don't recover files to the drive/partition you are search save if you can to a external source whether usb hdd or flash drive or floppy.

CopyWipe? is a utility for copying or securely overwriting (wiping/erasing) entire hard drives. CopyWipe can ease and expedite the transition to a new hard drive by copying the entire contents of one drive to another. CopyWipe can also help prevent confidential or private data from being recovered, by securely wiping the contents of a drive. A number of options are provided for wiping, most of which exceed governmental standards (such as DoD 5220.22-M, NAVSO P-5239-26, etc.); this allows the user to choose an optimal balance between security and duration of the wiping operation.

A USB 2.0-to-IDE adapter, along with CopyWipe, provides a convenient method to create and maintain a complete hard drive mirrored backup. Click here for an example of a USB2 to IDE adapter and here for another.

Best of all it's now FREE!

At the copywipe download page above there is also a BartPE plugin for the software.

1. ADRC Data Recovery Tools - Undelete

When a file is deleted from the data media, the space that the file used to reside is marked as available or the file in question is marked "deleted". For as long as the space has not been overwritten, the data can be retrieved.

ADRC Data Recovery Tools - Undelete helps you to recover lost and deleted data from hard drives, floppy disks, basic or dynamic volumes, compressed or fragmented files. Besides hard disk drives, it also supports removable devices such as compact flash, Smart Media, Iomega Zip drives, USB drives etc?

The file recovery tool allows recovery of accidental deletion of files. It works on drives formatted in FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS file-systems. It works under all windows family operating systems such as Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003 Server and Windows XP.

You could undelete the files even after you have cleared the recycle bin.

2. ADRC Data Recovery Tools - Copy FilesThis is not a normal kind of copy function. The Copy Files tool actually recovers files from disks with physical damage such propagation of bad sectors on disk. Normal windows copy will result in system being "halt" or "hang" (the infamous CRC IO errors). In this situation, Copy Files tool could come to your rescue handy.

The program will attempt to recover every readable bits of a file and put the bits together to salvage your data. It is hopeful that in the worst case scenario, most parts of files can still be extracted even some parts are gone.

To reduce the number of tedious retries, whenever a bad sector is encountered, the program will intelligently search the neighbouring sectors to determine the extent of bad blocks and mathematically calculate the number of retires needed.

It also features the "Copy Sub Folders" option which scans through the entire directory and attempts to copy everything you need.

3. ADRC Data Recovery Tools - Raw Copy

Raw Copy transfers the binary raw image from one drive directly to another. It is rather similar to the infamous "Ghost" function. You could perform a disk clone backup (or if your disk is slightly faulty) and do not want perform a file by file copy. This is really ideal if you do not want to re-install the operating system. As the transfer is done in true low level binary, you could do this for drives with an unknown file system to be cloned such as game machines, Mac disk etc. With some built in recovery features, the program will try to recover data even if it is on bad sectors to ensure all or maximum data is restored from the drive.

This is a very powerful function and must be used with care. As it is a binary dump, the original data on the target drive is no longer recoverable upon completion of process.

4. ADRC Data Recovery Tools - Image Backup / Restore

Image Backup / Restore create and write disk image files to and from hard drives and any removable media. In just one click, it performs wholesome backup and restoration of the entire drive. A common application is to create a floppy image for transfer across internet and then downloaded the image to be written back to floppy again. One can also backup a disk image for safe keeping. It is an ideal way to backup all your operating system, data and program files.

5. ADRC Data Recovery Tools - Boot Builder

The primary function of Boot builder is to allow you to import or export the boot sector of a drive (either FAT or NTFS boot sector type). In case the boot sector is damaged due to virus or system corruption, one can easily import it back. You can even custom make your own boot sector from scratch (if you know the standard parameters) to rescue a corrupted disk

Data Disk Recovery

The real limitation of this software that I can see is that you have to keep downloading the software every few weeks/months as it keeps expiring.

DDR - what is it

Data Disc Recovery is very good and efficient recovery program containing standard recovering procedures and several additional elements.
Currently program is accessible as freeware during licnece agreement time.DDR in version equal to any other recovery software will be accessible for free. But Data Analysis Group reserve right to give access to more advance version of program on commercial terms.
Freeware version has only one limit - time, access time for any tests needed. After that time using of program without DAG authorisation is illegal. There is possibility to buy licence from DAG for legal using of DDR with it's full capability.
Before ending of free licence, there should be newer versions of software accessible thru internet, and they can be used for free during testing time. Also using DDR you can allways download new free version of software, wich will be better than one before.
This how currenty looks accessing DDR.

Project basic advantages

DDR has many advanteges, but it's most is program working speed. Scanning takes 2 to 10 times faster than using other programs, and result is at least the same and even better. Why wait 30 minutes, when in 5 you can have the same? For bigger partitions scanning economy is even greater.
Why DDR is so fast? Well it has very interesting memory mannager and internal organisation, and 'good hunch' because it knows where to look and search where it need to be. Besides scanning algorithm is very effective and every information from hard drive is absorbed only once. Only needed informations are gathered and that has big influence in program working efficiency.
Another DDR advantage is, that program pretend to be the first multitasking recovery application. For example, if the hard drive has to be scanned for 30 minutes in the same time you could do something else like listing and recovering found files and be informed about any found data before program finishes and allows to click. 'Yes' button, DDR is going to be friendly, multitaksing, application giving results of scanning in real time. We are one step to reach that condition, but the problem isn't DDR algorithm, but GUI wxWidgets libraries, because they are not good enough, or we know to little about their usage. It should be cleared in near future.

Active@ KillDisk - Hard Drive Eraser is powerful and compact DOS software that allows you to destroy all data on hard and floppy drives completely, excluding any possibility of future recovery of deleted files and folders. It's a hard drive and partition eraser utility.

If you use FDISK, FORMAT utilities, or DELETE standard operating system command for data removal, there is always a chance to recover deleted data (using undelete file or some data recovery software) and use against the owner's will. We highly recommend you to run this FREE utility for the hard and floppy drives you want to dispose of, recycle, re-use, sell or donate to somebody.

Active@ KillDisk conforms to US Department of Defense clearing and sanitizing standard DoD 5220.22-M. The most secure Gutmann's data destruction method is also implemented. You can be sure that once you clean up with Active@ KillDisk, sensitive information is purged out forever.

This is security software for unrecoverable data elimination for any computer capable of booting in DOS mode from floppy drive. It uses access to the drive's data on a physical level via BIOS bypassing logical drive structure organization, thus it does not matter what operating systems and file systems located on the machine.

It can work with DOS, Windows 95 / 98, Windows NT / 2000 / XP / XP Professional x64 / XP Home x64/ 2003 Server x64, Linux, Unix for PC.

Active@ KillDisk FREE version features:

  • Double confirmation excludes possibility of accidental erasing of data on a drive
  • Very easy to use, utility has intuitive console interface and command line mode for the advanced users
  • Works on any system capable of boot from floppy in DOS mode

tokiwa - Data Recovery
DataRecovery is freeware and written by TOKIWA
to undelete accidentally deleted files even from recycle bin.

But DataRecovery doesn't assure that all files deleted can be recovered successfully. It mostly depends on your system/configuration and we can't support each of all those varieties.

Compatible operating systems
- Windows95/98/Me/NT4.0/2000/XP/2003

  • FAT12,FAT16,FAT32,NTFS undeletion
  • undelete NTFS compressed files
  • undelete EFS encrypted files
  • wipe out deleted files never to be recovered again(NEW)
  • runnable from floppy disk
  • search by partial string in the file name
  • undelete whole files in a directory
  • undelete multiple files by selecting them with Shift/Ctrl key
  • sort items displayed by clicking column headers
  • neither installation nor DLLs is needed
DataRecovery writes null to the disk when wiping files. But on NTFS volume, it wipes only file entries with data area intact in order not to overwrite existing files. Therefore wiped files is recoverable with some other excellent tools on NTFS volume.

TestDisk & PhotoRec - data recovery tools
TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting your Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

TestDisk can
  • Fix partition table, recover deleted partition
  • Recover FAT32 boot sector from its backup
  • Rebuild FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector
  • Fix FAT tables
  • Rebuild NTFS boot sector
  • Recover NTFS boot sector from its backup
  • Fix MFT using MFT mirror
  • Locate ext2/ext3 Backup SuperBlock
TestDisk has features for both novices and experts. For those who know little or nothing about data recovery techniques, TestDisk can be used to collect detailed information about a non-booting drive which can then be sent to a tech for further analysis. Those more familiar with such procedures should find TestDisk a handy tool in performing onsite recovery.

Operating Systems: DOS (either real or in a Windows 9x DOS-box),Windows (NT4, SunOS and MacOS.
Source files and precompiled binary executables are available for DOS, Win32, MacOSX and Linux from the download page .
More info @ Website

PhotoRec is a companion program to TestDisk.
PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from Hard Disks and CDRom and lost pictures (thus, its 'Photo Recovery' name) from digital camera memory.
