Samsung Galaxy Beam flexes projection power

Summary: Beam us up, Samsung! A built-in projector at the top of the phone transforms what it otherwise an ordinary-looking Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

BARCELONA, Spain--We've talked about placing pico projectors in smartphones for years, and now at last is our first glimpse of a phone that's making that detail front and center. Ever the tease, Samsung uploaded images of the smartphone its calling the Samsung Galaxy Beam on Google +.

Samsung isn't saying much, other than the fact that the Galaxy smartphone has an "ultra-bright" projector pumping out 15 lumens, a unit of light. While a projector isn't limited to one medium, look for Samsung to make a case for broadcasting photos and videos with friends, rather than using the phone as a business tool.

There's no official word yet on the when and where of a release, pricing, and other specs, but the timing of the Google+ upload suggests we'll hear a lot more very shortly from Mobile World Congress.
